Happy Vermonters: Megan Humphrey on Making a Difference in the Community

“When I first came to UVM as a student in 1979, I remember thinking, ‘Why would anyone leave this place?’ I know we’re in a bubble here—I get that—and all of us are so lucky to live in Vermont. But I also understand there are huge issues we need to deal with just like everyplace else—homelessness, opioid addiction, racism, and water quality in the lake. I think what sets us apart in some ways is that you can make a difference in the community really easily here.”

-Megan Humphrey of Burlington, founder and executive director of Helping and Nurturing Diverse Seniors (HANDS) and creator of Sweet Basil Cards

Happy Vermonters is a series of stories sharing why people love Vermont.

I first met Megan Humphrey more than thirty years ago when she needed a housemate and I was lucky enough to answer her ad. Megan has been giving back to the community since before I met her, and she has been doing it quietly and consistently, with no strings. She is the kind of human with whom anyone would be fortunate to cross paths. In the many years since I left Burlington, I still have never met anyone quite like her!
